Anticipation

Thursday, April 28th, 2005

We leave for the airport in about 7 hours. I’ve got my suitcase packed, though i can’t help but feel im forgetting something. I’m trying to get some work related things done before I leave, but it’s a bit difficult to really concentrate at this point. I’ve been planning this trip for almost a year and I leave in a few hours.

The odd part is, I wasn’t really all that excited about it until last night. Especially the last few days. There’s been so much else going on, preparing for the trip was just another stress. Now, there’s not much else going on. I’m sitting in my room, trying to get work done and watching the clock.

You may have noticed the timer over there still says I’ve got a day and some hours to go before the trip. Truth is, that timer is set to when we’ll be boarding the boat, not when we leave. Our flight leaves tonight around midnight and we’ll be spending a day in Fort Lauderdale. The ship leaves Saturday afternoon.

Man oh man. Only a few hours to go.

By the way, I plan to be posting news and pics from the boat. Check back here between now and the 7th of May for mid-cruise updates. Then you can expect a full report, with lots more photos shortly after.

See you all soon.

The Cruise

Tuesday, April 26th, 2005

Man oh man. At this point in the game, I’m not sure if I should be excited or stressed. Our cruise is only but a few days away. Right now, its Tuesday at 2:20am. That means, two days and twenty some-odd hours from now, our plane will be departing for Ft. Lauderdal. I’m working pre-programming our itinerary into this here blog.

We leave this Friday and return Saturday the 7th. Check back here to see what we’re up to each day. If I can swing it, I intend to post here as much as possible, maybe even pictures too.

Blog Explosion

Wednesday, April 20th, 2005

I just found this site. Seems to be sort of an attention trader. You login and look at other people’s blogs. Browsing other blogs earns you points towards having other users sent to your blog. Interesting idea. Imma give it a try. Maybe you should too:

Re: A Girl Gamer

Tuesday, April 19th, 2005

I should start out this post by mentioning that its a reply to a post made by my hot girlfriend on the subject of female gamers. Here, I intend to respond to some of the questions posed and give the male (at least my) take on the girl gamer.

The sad truth is, gaming is the realm of the guys. But that’s not to say women are not welcome in this world. In fact, to a gamer, the ideal girl is one who will spend hours fighting her way into the depths of Ragefire Chasm or the Wailing Caverns to help you find that perfect piece of armor. My girl is that girl.

My belief is this: there are two reasons why guys want girl gamers. One: instead of “turn that off and give me attention”, it’s “Oohh. I got winner.” Two: other guys want girl gamers. Shared interests are important for couples. Even guys know this. That’s why girls who like cars, guns, sports, and other traditionally masculine activities are highly sought after.

As for your questions my dear…

So why is it that it is such a rare thing for a girl to be into games?

A lot of games are targeted at guys. That’s not to say there aren’t games that are gender netural or even targeted at the ladies.

If most girls are against video games, isn’t that the way that a girl should be?

NO. Most definately not. The industry should be, and is, changing to be better about female gamers. People should never strive to be the way most people are just because most people are that way. Girls, especially, feel pressure from their peers to conform.

But I am curious, is there really a group of guys out there that are not nerds that appreciate a girl that plays video games?

Yes. Very yes. Gaming is no longer just the realm of the nerd. Sure, tabletop games involving dice and BO will always be nerd only activities. But, the average age fore a gamer today is 32 years old. Many of them have a job and a wife and (maybe even) kids. The luckiest of those guys will show up on XBox Live or World of Warcraft or even Counterstrike with their wives.

Penny-Arcade: Oneupsmanship

Wednesday, April 13th, 2005

I don’t know if I’ve mentioned Penny-Arcade before. Well, if I haven’t, I should have. I’m quite the devoted reader, you know. Anyway, its this video games related web comic. It’s certainly not for everyone, but I thinks it’s damn brilliant. Today’s is a shining example of their brilliance.

If I’m feeling a less lazy later on, I’ll put up a buncha linkies to some of my fav’s. Anyway, if you enjoy this one, I recommend you paruse their archives.
