I love mornings

Friday, July 29th, 2005

Yeah, you read that right. I do love mornings, I just hate that I have to wake up to experience them. I love being up before the world. I love the crisp moring air and the way the steam rises off that morning cup of joe. The sad truth is, I rarely ever am awake for the morning unless I’m still awake from the night before. This morning is one of those cases. I’m actually sitting at my desk AT WORK right now. While it’s not at all uncommon for me to be at my desk at this hour, it’s usually my desk at home. And, I’m usually asleep at my desk, or on the floor next to my desk.

See, the thing with me is, I don’t really enjoy sleep as some people do. In fact, I despise it. It’s not the actual act of sleeping as much as it is all the time I spend sleeping when I would be much happier not sleeping. Since my battle with sleep is constant, I occasionally find myself asleep at certain tasks. One of these tasks that often dooms me to slumberland is reading. And since much of the reading I do is right off the computer screen, I once and a while find myself asleep at my desk.

Google Amazes Again

Custom GoogleThe good people over at Google never cease to amaze me. For a good bit of time, I’ve been enjoying the Google custom homepage. I just today noticed a major improvement and it’s got everything I wanted and then some.

For those of you who are not familiar with this feature, you can check it out here (www.google.com/ig). Basically its the just the good ol’ google search page with a ton of info below it. The really cool part is, its all info that you want. You can supply a link to any RSS or Atom feed, you can create a section that has links to sites that you visit frequently. Plus, there are some other nice features like weather, news, directions, and movie times all available right there.

There is something to be said about the simplicity of the standard Google home page, but for all those people who use Google as their home page, this is a welcome addition. And the standard site is still right there if you don’t prefer the new version.

Interesting Night

So Ben and I decide to go grab a couple drinks after work. It’s kinda nice to be able to hang out for a bit at the bar and unwind after coding all day. We’re pretty safe about the whole drinking/driving thing. Neither of us drink very much and we hang out for a long while before attempting to drive anywhere; its mostly just to hang out.

Anyway, we decided to go to the bar around 10. We’d only been sitting there for about 10 minutes when some drunk guy comes up and starts mumbling to us about god knows what for fourty minutes or so. We thought the guy would never shut up. Finally, he decides to take off. So he leaves and just like a tag team match or something, some other guy comes up to us right as the other guy is taking leaving the place.

We ended up talking to this other guy for like 4 hours. He was a nice guy and all. He kept us laughing, but GOOD LORD. We didn’t get outta there till almost 3. It was one of those awkward situations where the person doesn’t really stop talking long enough for you to tell them it’s time for you to leave.

I just got home and I have to say, I’m quite excited about getting to bed.

IE Sucks

Thursday, July 21st, 2005

As a web developer, I’m constantly impressed by how HORRIBLE Microsoft’s Internet Explorer. Most projects require a developer to make the site work, then make it work in IE. It’s a huge pain in the butt. This site, for example, looks much much better in a good browser like Mozilla Firefox. Without much extra work from me, it does nice things like colors links that will open in a new window a different color. Oh, and the sidebar works. I haven’t quite nailed down why it’s all messed up in IE. Admitedly, I haven’t spend a lot of time on it, but I really shouldn’t have to. Every other browser shows it just fine. Netscape, Opera, Safari, Firefox, Mozilla, you name it. It really is a shame. Also, lets not forget about security. Those of you who are constantly plagued with spyware and other nastyware can often point the blame squarely at IE.

So the moral of the story is GET FIREFOX. It really is worth the download. Install it and never use IE again. I promise you, if you give it a chance, you’ll like it better.

Things are Looking Up

Tuesday, July 12th, 2005

I never did finish documenting my trip. Rest assured, it was an awesome trip. And the moral of the story: Kristen and I are engaged. I’ve actually been working on writing up the other days behind the scense, but time is always the limiting factor. Eventually, I’ll get them all up there. I’ve actually got a couple other related projects going, too.

Marrage

So. I’m gonna be getting married. I couldn’t be more excited about it, either. It’s still a ways off, and there is much planning to be done, but the wheels are in motion. I can’t wait.

The one thing I hadn’t really considered when I decided to propose was engagement. The more we get into the planning of this thing, the more I realize what a big todo it is. For some reason, I was thinking I would just propose and we would get married. As it turns out, you have to pick a place, and flowers, and a dress, and a suit, and a cake, and napkins, and invitations, and colors, and this, and that, and who knows what else. Being engaged is hard work. I guess what I really mean is, I want to be married, I don’t want to get married. Oh well. You do what you gotta do.
